After a job interview, it’s normal to reflect on your performance while waiting for an answer. Key indicators can signal that the interview was successful. Here are six signs that you’re making a big impact. 

1. You Were in the Interview Longer Than Expected 

One of the most evident signs that an interview is going well is that it lasts longer. Most interviewers have deadlines, and this is especially true when there are multiple interviews for a role. If your interview extends beyond the allotted time, it shows that the interviewer is engaged and wants to know more about you. It shows that they are seriously considering you as a candidate. Remember, the more time they spend with you, the better.  

2. The Interview Felt Conversational 

Suppose your interview feels more like a friendly conversation than a strict Q&A session, it is a vital sign of success. The tone of the discussion indicates that you have a personal connection with the interviewer, and you’ve built rapport. This is necessary because employers want to hire people, they feel will fit the team well. You find exchanging ideas, sharing experiences, and connecting with the interviewer easily. This demonstrates your ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, which is an essential feature in any work environment. 

3. You Were Told What You Would Be Doing in the Role 

If the interviewer uses phrases like “In this role, you will be responsible for…” instead of “The successful candidate will…” it suggests that they are portraying you in the position – as a positive sign. Additionally, if they explain the responsibilities and daily tasks in detail – understand that they are serious about you understanding the full scope of your role and what is expected of you. 

4. The Interviewer Seemed Engaged 

The interviewer’s body language and behavior can provide important information about how well the interview went. If the interviewer leans in between answers, makes eye contact, nods in approval, smiles, or comments, they are actively involved in what you have to say. Enthusiastic comments and follow-up questions indicate that they want your qualifications and experience to be used. On the other hand, if the interviewer seems distracted or disengaged, it could also be a sign that they are not interested in your candidature for this role. 

5. You Were Introduced to Potential Colleagues or Senior Decision-Makers 

Getting to know other team members or a senior leader during an interview is an excellent sign. Hiring managers will never message you to others, unless they feel you are a strong candidate. These introductions help other team members to understand your personality and how you fit into a dynamic team. Moreover, if you get to know high-level decision makers such as directors or executives, it’s a sign that the interviewer will seek their approval and wants to speed up the hiring process. 

6. You Were Asked About Next Steps and Closing Questions 

Another sign that the interview is going well is when the interviewer asks questions about notice periods, availability, or the upcoming interview. These closing questions indicate that they are considering moving forward with your application and want to make sure they don’t lose you to another opportunity. Additionally, let’s say the interviewer outlines the next steps in the hiring process and provides a clear timeline for you to respond, in such a case, it’s a positive indicator that your role is being taken seriously.

While these signs don’t guarantee a job offer, they can give you a good sense of how well your interview went.
